I keyed in the alarm code. Click of the gate unlocking. 15 seconds to disengage the house alarm.

Inside, stale air reeked of must. Dampness clung to the walls; cold to the floor. Dust wrapped the few pieces of furniture left.

I took pictures in the grey light straining through grimy windows. Cob-webs; mutant dust-bunnies; garbage; recyclables.

In a battle of good and evil I didn’t know was raging, I was the last left standing. To the victor . . .  Chateau de Sable.

To the loser . . . . the cleaning contract. To Chateau de Stable.
