Song Lyric Sunday: Prince’s Legacies

Prince’s passing brought accolades concerning him, his music, and his influence on music. To me, he was a dim memory, had a symbol for a name for awhile, and, of course, Purple Rain.
I knew he was “big” once, but that seemed like decades ago. The internet’s “10 Songs You Didn’t Know Prince Wrote” caught my eye. (Honest, usually I read more intellectual material Winking smile) Well, I was surprised a lot and often.

Strangely enough, I had intended to go retro with “Manic Monday,” by the Bangles soon. Turns out it’s a Prince song. He used an alias on the album credits.

To keep with Prince theme – Sinéad O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” is a Prince-penned song; O’Connor tinkered with the lyrics. Really, Prince started what O’Connor finished. It was one of the first of her songs I heard; it brings me to tears every time.

So, I owe Prince an apology for not recognizing sooner the impact he had on music as a writer – especially songs performed and recorded by women. Purple Reigns.

Here are two videos for Song Lyric Sunday that Prince wrote:

“Manic Monday”

Six o’clock already
I was just in the middle of a dream
I was kissin’ Valentino
By a crystal blue Italian stream
But I can’t be late
‘Cause then I guess I just won’t get paid
These are the days
When you wish your bed was already made
It’s just another manic Monday
I wish it were Sunday
‘Cause that’s my fun day
My I don’t have to run day
It’s just another manic Monday
Have to catch an early train
Got to be to work by nine
And if I had an aeroplane
I still couldn’t make it on time
‘Cause it takes me so long just to figure out what I’m gonna wear
Blame it on the train
But the boss is already there
It’s just another manic Monday
Wish it were Sunday
‘Cause that’s my fun day
My I don’t have to run day
It’s just another manic Monday
All of the nights
Why did my lover have to pick last night
To get down?
(Last night, last night)
Doesn’t it matter
That I have to feed the both of us
Employment’s down
He tells me in his bedroom voice
“C’mon honey, let’s go make some noise”
Time it goes so fast
(When you’re having fun)
It’s just another manic Monday
I wish it were Sunday
‘Cause that’s my fun day
I don’t have to run day
It’s just another manic Monday
I wish it was Sunday
‘Cause that’s my fun day
It’s just a manic Monday

“Nothing Compares 2 U”

It’s been seven hours and fifteen days
Since u took your love away
I go out every night and sleep all day
Since u took your love away
Since u been gone I can do whatever I want
I can see whomever I choose
I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant
But nothing
I said nothing can take away these blues
`Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares 2 u
It’s been so lonely without u here
Like a bird without a song
Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling
Tell me baby where did I go wrong
I could put my arms around every boy I see
But they’d only remind me of you
I went to the doctor and guess what he told me
Guess what he told me
He said, “Girl, you better try to have fun no matter what you do.”
But he’s a fool
`Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares 2 u
All the flowers that u planted, mama
In the back yard
All died when u went away
I know that living with u baby was sometimes hard
But I’m willing to give it another try
Nothing compares
Nothing compares 2 u
Nothing compares
Nothing compares 2 u
Nothing compares
Nothing compares 2 u

  1. He did many things behind the scenes. To be someone who looked so flamboyant, you’d think he would want all kinds of attention, but he was very private.
He did many things without any recognition.
His contribution to the music world is a great part of his legacy, but he was also a big philanthropist.
I’ve been a fan since the first time I heard him. Yes, before Purple Rain. I stayed a fan the more I learned about him.
I feel like I lost an old friend.

    • When we connect with an artist, we do so on many levels. I can understand you feel like you lost an old friend — he was one to you.
Prince didn’t have the same connection with me; but, on the other hand, Bowie did. Then I felt like I’d lost an old friend.
His estate is estimated to be large, so I’m sure his charitable will shine on.

Like some of the best musicians and creators, he was multi-talented and gifted, and sometimes “hid in the shadows” – the actual depth, scope and wealth of his body of work is enormous – more than just what we have publicly available. Whether one was caught up with his work and music as an artist, probably has a lot to do with a generational thing too – but it can be said, truthfully, his output is as impressive and prodigious, as some of the other, lately lost greats, like Bowie or Frye.

the time has come, the walrus said, to talk of many things . . .
