Song Lyrics Sunday: the Watersons: Bright Phoebus

Today bright Phoebus she smiled down on me for the very first time;
For the very first time she smiled on me.
Today bright Phoebus she smiled down on me for the very first time;
For the very first time she smiled on me.

No more clouds, no more rain, gone the clouds, she smiled again.
Today bright Phoebus she smiled down on me for the very first time;
For the very first time she smiled on me.

This morning cockerel crowed and he woke me for the very first time;
For the very first time he crowed for me.
He flapped his wings and he strut around for me for the very first time;
For the very first time he crowed for me.

No more clouds, no more rain, gone the clouds, she smiled again.
Today bright Phoebus she smiled down on me for the very first time;
For the very first time she smiled, she smiled, she smiled on me.

Discovered the Watersons through Emily Barker, who included “Bright Phoebus” on her Despite the Snow album in 2008. Here are some various YouTube versions; the Liverpool Symphony is probably the best.

Here is Mike singing the song with his sister Lal.

Let bright Phoebus smile down on you. For Helen’s Song Lyric Sunday however I have just actually read this week’s post. This is definitely NOT 90s music! Back to YouTube, lol

  1. I love simple folk songs like this. They have few lyrics, but what is there usually tells such a great story or conveys such a great message. This one, in particular, made me smile.

    As for Song Lyric Sunday, it is still open to whatever you choose to share, so no need to follow the theme I’ve posted. Thanks for playing along. I enjoy your submission a lot! :)
