Song Lyric Sunday: “Going Home” by Chris de Burgh (1975)

Helen @ this life one word at a time suggests this week for Song Lyrics Sunday we:

Post a song about missing someone you love. Let’s let them know how much we miss them and can’t wait to see them again.

For some reason, I drew a complete blank, shuffling through the juke box/music streamer in my head.

I often sing in my head the lines:

I thought the streets of London
Would be paved with gold,
But the only gold was in the setting sun,
And these city nights are so cold.

Those words popped into my head, and I then remembered it is a song about going home to a lover. So it seemed to fit the theme, goes back to the mid-1970s, and I’m not sure how many folks are familiar with this artist or album. Another one I wore the grooves out.

“Going Home” is song from the perspective of the lover returning after trying to make it in the “big city.” Chris De Burgh wrote and recorded it on Spanish Train and Other Stories (1975).

And, Helen, I hope you do get a drive with your daughter in August, music blasting, both of you singing along.

I left my home by the ocean,
I left my love by the sea,
Dreaming I could sing my songs in the city…
I thought the streets of London
Would be paved with gold,
But the only gold was in the setting sun,
And these city nights are so cold.
And you know that feeling when you’ve been too long,
And you wanna go home and it’s so strong,
I’m going home, I’m going home,
Oh the leaves are falling and the wind is calling
And I must get on the road,
You’ll be alone, you’ll be alone,
But if you’re crying to the rhythm of the falling rain,
It’s alright, I’m on my way, I’m going home,
I’m going home, yea…
Jilly she’s got a smile in her eye,
And a bed just right for two,
Silly how much I love her, but I do,
Sunny days will be here again,
She whispered in my ear,
Oh Lord it’s funny how much I’ve missed the country rain,
That’s a sound I love to hear…
And I know that feeling and I’ve been too long,
And I wanna go home and it’s so strong,
I’m going home, I’m going home,
Oh the leaves are falling and the wind is calling
And I must get on the road,
You’ll be alone, you’ll be alone,
But if you’re crying to the rhythm of the falling rain,
It’s alright, I’m on the way, I’m going home,
I’m going home, yea…
Oh hold on darling, I’m going home,
I’m on the way, I’m going home,
I’m going home, Hold on darling…

  1. I can only imagine that Adelle is singing something very similar in her head right now. She really is so excited to come home and we are so excited for her to be here, even if it is just for a few days. I loved the beat to this song, and the lyrics are amazing! I’m sure happy you’re mind thought of this one and you chose to share it. :)

Thanks so much. I hope Adelle and I can get a drive in while she’s here. :)
